Intertraffic Innovation Award 2008 - onsite presentation

BAM Infratechniek Wins Intertraffic Innovation Award 2008
At the opening ceremony of Intertraffic Amsterdam 2008, the winners of the Intertraffic Innovation Award were announced. Group awards were presented in three different categories: Traffic Management, Parking, and Infrastructure & Safety.

The winner for the category Traffic Management is Funkwerk Argovision for the Argoscan. For the category Parking, the winner is Skidata for its Power Cash. BAM Infratechniek with their product Fine Dust Removal System FDRS-PM10 is the winner in the category Infrastructure & Safety and was also chosen as overall winner for the Intertraffic Innovation Award.

The awards were presented to the winners by Wim Kuijken, the Dutch Secretary General of the Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management.

Jury's notes on BAM Infratechniek - Fine Dust Removal System FDRS-PM10 >>
Jury chair Fred Wegman, Managing Director of Netherlands National Road Safety Research Institute SWOV, commented that BAM Infratechniek’s innovation creates an electrical field that acts as an electrostatic ‘roof’ over a road segment. This allows fine particles (PM10) to become electrically charged and so collected for harmless disposal. This straightforward technology focusses on a major road environmental issue that could not previously be satisfactorily dealt with. The jury considered it “a major breakthrough, being capable of installation in tunnels and urban canyons as well as in open-road locations. We look forward to learning the results of major deployments planned in the near future." Fine dust problems create a major threat to public health, which has resulted in tough European legislation. Although a final estimate of effects and costs is not yet available, the jury considers this a very promising approach in an area which needs serious improvement. (Stand 01.412 ).
Jury's notes on Funkwerk Argovision - Argoscan >>
Funkwerk Argovision’s Argoscan is a camera-based monitoring system designed to ensure safer opening up of hard shoulder running to relieve traffic congestion. The jury saw it as responding proactively to the anticipated increased use of hard shoulder running on motorways. “It keeps traffic operators better informed – at shorter notice - of potential hazards over longer distances”. Up-to-date information on incidents on hard shoulders, for the use of operators in motorway network traffic management centres, is of crucial importance for safe use, and Argoscan delivers this. (Stand 03.117).
Jury's notes on Skidata - Power Cash >>
Power Cash by Skidata is a new parking terminal designed to serve as a combined charge payment and vending machine allowing purchases of eg travel and event tickets. The jury said: "It is opening up a new and promising field by positioning parking as part of a chain of mobility events. It brings together a range of providers and offers in a convenient, accessible and consumer friendly format.” The jury considered it as an invitation to providers of services to cooperate. It can also provide important support for mobility management. (Stand 01.116).

Shortlisted companies in the infrastructure and safety category:
Category winner & overall winner:
  • BAM Infratechniek (NL), Fine Dust Removal System FDRS-PM10 - stand 01.412
  • >>
An electric field acts as an electrostatic roof over the road allowing fine dust particles to become positively charged. Passive roadside screens connected to earth then attract the dust particles.

  • 3S Co Ltd (Korea), Shock Absorbing Safety Barrier - stand 07.501
  • >>
The support posts of the Shock Absorbing Safety Barrier are hollow, and contain a coil spring which makes the barrier revert to its original position after a crash.

  • Cross Zlin (CZ), Winter Maintenance Index - stand 02.114
  • >>
Winter Maintenance Index is a system for analysing and comparing road winter maintenance performance and costs in relation to the actual meteorological circumstances. WMI makes it possible to compare individual contractors’ deployments and costs.

Shortlisted companies in the traffic management category:
    Category winner
  • Funkwerk Argovision (D), Argoscan - stand 03.117
  • >>
To allow safe hard-shoulder running, CCTV images are filed so that the information remains available until an entire section has been checked. An alarm is triggered in the event that anything starts moving within the viewing area of any individual camera after the operator has shifted his/her attention to the next one.

  • Eco-counter (F), Zelt - stand 01.232
  • >>
The Zelt inductive loop is highly selective in allowing bicycles alone to be counted in mixed traffic. As the inductive mass of a bicycle is only 5% of that of a car, it is remarkable that the ‘footprint’ of a bicycle can still be detected when a car is passing nearby.

  • Vialis (NL), EnViver - stand 01.212
  • >>
EnViver is a system for predicting the impact of traffic on the environment. It is a combination of the VISSIM traffic simulation programme and the VERSIT+ model, which predicts emissions. In the specification phase, road authorities can now assess which traffic plan is likely to be most sparing of the environment.

Shortlisted companies in the parking category:
    Category winner
  • Skidata (A), Power Cash - stand 01.116
  • >>
Power Cash is a terminal which acts as a combined payment and vending machine. This time-saving combination of functionalities opens up possibilities for P+R or P+Shop. It illustrates the fact that parking is not a stand-alone feature but part of a chain of activities for getting from A to B.

  • OpenTraffic Systems (ES), OPS - stand 01.206
  • >>
OPS is an open parking system for real-time parking management. It makes meter feeding impossible; while, through centralised control of vehicle licence plate numbers, parking wardens can be notified of any overstay through their PDAs. It is also possible to detect stolen cars; while, via the licence plate numbers, the parking operator has access to a range of useful data.
